How To Get Pregnant – Fertility Herbs

Article by Rachael Towne

Chinese herbs used in aiding fertility date back to 200 A.D., Records dealing with fertility herbs are cited in the famous medical text Shang Han Lun, the first book devoted solely to gynecology and obstetrics. In modern-day China, herbs are being used to treat infertility in both men and women. These results are reported in Chinese medical journals and had been abstracted in English. The Institute for Traditional Medicine had obtained these reports to aid practitioners in selecting the appropriate fertility herbs for different cases and to explain the dosage, duration of treatment, and prognosis.

There are more than 150 different herbs, usually given in complex formulas comprised of 15 or more ingredients. They are used to treat infertility by correcting a functional or organic problem. Over the centuries, the formulas had varied somewhat. Individual practitioners may have various preferences for particular herbs creating many variations among formulas that are recommended. The greatest variation in the selection of herbs and formulas are derived from the differences in the individuals being treated. Fertility herbs may contain such ingredients such as deer antler and sea horse, but most are derived from roots, barks, leaves, flowers, and fruits. The herbs for men and for women tend to be different, but there is considerable overlap in the ingredients used.

Some fertility herb formulas can be purchased off the shelf in public pharmacies in China. However, for most men and women with persistent infertility, these herbs are obtained from a doctor who is expert in Chinese herbs. In the U.S., fertility-promoting herbs are mainly prescribed by acupuncturists, naturopaths, or medical doctors who are familiar with Chinese herbs. A list of such practitioners is provided by The Institute for Traditional Medicine. These fertility herbs may come in the form of pills, tablets, granules, or decoctions (teas). Duration and total consumption of the various fertility herbs will depend upon the individual’s infertility issues.

SUCCESS RATE OF FERTILITY HERBS The success rates any given individual cannot be predicted. Clinical studies conducted in China shows about 70% of infertility cases (male and female) treated by Chinese herbs resulted in pregnancy or restored fertility. Overall success rates ranged from about 50% up to more than 90% depending on the types of infertility. Cases of infertility include fallopian tubes blockage, amenorrhea, absent ovulation, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, low sperm count, nonliquification of semen, and other causes.
